The European bee-eater (Merops apiaster) is a striking near passerine bird in the bee-eater family, Meropidae. It breeds in southern and central Europe, northern and southern Africa, and western Asia. Although the resident southern African population stays put, most European bee-eaters are strongly migratory, wintering in tropical Africa. Occasionally, they overshoot their usual range and breed in northern Europe. These richly colored birds have brown and yellow upper parts, green wings, and a black beak. They can reach a length of 27–29 cm, including their two elongated central tail feathers.
